Fungal microscopy is not only exciting, it is also very useful: it allows – given the necessary experience – unambiguous and instantaneous fungal determinations without the need for time-consuming DNA analyses or cell cultures.

Mushrooms in the macro world:

A specimen the size of approximately 9 square kilometers (965 hectares) and a calculated weight of 600 tons was found in the Malheur National Forest, Oregon. The mushroom in Oregon is considered the largest living creature on Earth in terms of its areal extent. Its age is estimated at 2400 years*.

For comparison, an adult blue whale weighs about 150 tons.
